Best Retro Consoles On The Market Right Now

Since we’re heading into the holidays and about to have even more free time on our hands than usual, there’s no time like the present to indulge in a just a smidgen of video games nostalgia.

Lucky for those of us who do happen to an appreciation for the games and consoles of the 80s and/or 90s, most of the consoles of those golden years of the video games industry have been brought back in some shape or form.

The only research required of us is to make sure we buy the best console games-wise, as many retro consoles available on the market right now come pre-loaded with a set bundle – usually with games from the same era as the year of release of the console itself.

These are by far our top choices.

SEGA Genesis Mini

Chances are if you’re a fan of video games that you’re actually able to remember from way-back-when, you’d be willing to go the extra mile for a SEGA Genesis Mini console (“Mega Drive” for those of us who grew up in the U.K.).

This little masterpiece truly does date back all the way to yester-year both in terms of looks and the games that come readily loaded. This one’s a treat especially for the lovers of the small intricacies – the details that make of something an authentic blast from the past.

What’s more, at 42 classic titles priced at a very decent price, its retro bang for your buck too.

PlayStation Classic

Let’s be honest – no list such as this one would be complete without referencing the original PlayStation console from Sony. By far the best retro console featuring 3D games on the market right now, this one hails back to a crossover time from the 2D flat surfaces of 80s to the full 3D objects that captivated us so endlessly come the early 90s.

Priced slightly higher than the SEGA Genesis Mini, our take on the matter is that you cannot really put a price tag on the type of technology that brought us the very first Quake.  Or if you prefer other fun games, check this site!

Atari Flashback 8 Gold Deluxe

This one’s for the fans. Still – though stupendously retro in look as well as handle – the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Deluxe is basically the only collection of authentic Atari you’ll ever need. Not only does it come pre-loaded with a whopping 120 titles right out of Atari’s golden years, but the entire deal also includes two wireless joysticks and two paddles (remember Warlords?).

Notably missing however are Halloween and Empire strikes back. Still – it does come kitted out with a decent 720p HDMI output port. Also, it’s actually possible to pause, save, and rewind.

NES Classic

This is probably as nostalgic as nostalgic gets. Pre-loaded with 30 8-bit console games, we get to relive all the best of the cape global old classics – Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Excitebike, and (of course) Super Mario Bros.

Also, we get to save and display in HD at 60Hz. A real retro bargain in any Nintendo lover’s books.
